Paul Harris

PAUL HARRIS

Paul P. Harris was the founder and president emeritus of Rotary International.

He was born in Racine, Wisconsin, April 19, 1868, and spent his boyhood days in Vermont. He obtained his education at the University of Vermont, Princeton University and the University of Iowa. Following his graduation from the law school of Iowa, in 1881, he determined to spend the next five years in seeing the world and in coming to know his fellow men before settling down to practice law in Chicago.

He began his career as a reporter on a San Francisco newspaper and later became a teacher, and actor, a cowboy and a salesman. These five years of knock-about experiences broadened his vision and the acquaintances which he made were of material assistance in the early extension of Rotary.

In 1896, he went to Chicago and began the practice of law. Nine years later he became the founder of Rotary in that city.

While he devoted much time to Rotary, he was also prominent in civic and professional work in Chicago. He was a prominent member of the American Bar Association. He held many honorary degrees and the Boy Scouts of America bestowed upon him a Silver Beaver Award. He also possessed many decorations of foreign governments. Publication Title.
